Everly

Dear God, I couldn’t feel my legs. He’d never pushed this hard, nor did I realize that Hawk had another gear. So much for thinking I could take on the NHL’s star player. When we hit mile four, I was fairly certain I vomited in my mouth. I glanced down at my watch to see we were running sub six-minute miles, which was not the norm. We normally ran about thirty seconds slower per mile and then sprinted it out on the last half mile.

Today was definitely different.

He obviously had a point to prove. I was just a workout buddy now, when I wasn’t trying to psychoanalyze him, as he liked to say.

We turned the corner with a half mile left to go, and he took off. Mind you, the man had already killed it in his morning practice according to Wes, who’d shared that Hawk had been in a mood this morning. I shrugged it off even though I knew I was at the root of it.

I pumped my arms as hard as I could, but he was gone. Maybe there was symbolism there. He thought I was always running or pushing him and everyone away, and now he was doing it all on his own. I came down the final stretch. Stiffness had set in, and my legs were not cooperating. I came to a stop beneath the tree and gasped for air before completely embarrassing myself and vomiting right there in front of him. He didn’t try to comfort me or touch me, but he handed me a water.

“Here you go. Drink this.”

I wiped at my mouth and took a long swig. “Thank you.”

“You got it,” he said, but there was no warmth in his tone.

We stood there for a bit while I waited for my breathing to calm. “That was a great run.”

“Yeah. I figure you can tell Coach that I’m doing great, right?”

“Hawk. Come on. That’s not why I run with you, and you know that.”

“Yes. You’re here to work on my head, even though you don’t have your own head screwed on right.” He raised a brow.

“Does that make you feel better to call me out? Have at it, Hawk! I’m a mess. Is that what you want to hear?” I hissed.

“Not particularly. But I’m just calling it as I see it. You dropped a fucking bomb on me this morning, and you don’t want me to have a reaction? I’m just supposed to talk about my love for the sport with you? It’s bullshit, but I forgot… you’re the queen of bullshit.” He started walking toward the lake, and I huffed behind him.

“That was low. I just wanted to remember what we were here for. I have a job to do,” I shouted.

“So fucking do it.” He tugged his T-shirt over his head and tossed it on the ground. His tanned and chiseled abs were on full display, and I found it hard to look away. “I have a job to do too, Ever.
